Planting Bee Friendly Trees

Jun 19, 2024 | New

At Macadamia Farm Management (MFM), we are committed to implementing sustainable practices that not only enhance the health and productivity of our orchards but also provide significant returns for our clients. Our latest initiative, led by our horticulturist Chris Cannizzaro, focuses on planting bee-friendly trees to bolster biodiversity and support native pollinators. This project, supported by a grant from Bee Friendly Farming, involves the strategic planting of approximately 800 to 900 bee-friendly trees across our orchards.

Bee Friendly Farming by Macadamia Farm Management

Enhancing Biodiversity and Supporting Pollinators

Chris Cannizzaro and the MFM team are dedicated to creating a more bee-friendly environment within our orchards. By planting these trees in non-productive areas such as borders and creek lines, we aim to provide additional nectar and pollen sources for bees and native pollinators throughout the year. This initiative not only supplements pollination during the critical spring season but also supports Integrated Pest Management (IPM) by attracting beneficial insects like wasps and syrphid flies. Enhanced pollination leads to improved macadamia yields, directly benefiting our clients’ returns.

Chris highlights that the selected tree species flower at different times compared to macadamias, effectively extending the flowering period within the orchard. This strategic approach helps maintain a diverse floral landscape, catering to a variety of pollinators year-round. The extended flowering period contributes to a more resilient ecosystem, which can enhance crop stability and predictability, further securing returns for our clients.

Supported by a grant from Bee Friendly Farming, Chris plans to monitor the progress of these trees over time. The goal is to establish these trees as enduring resources for native pollinators, contributing to the overall health and resilience of the orchard ecosystem. By fostering a thriving, biodiverse environment, we not only support sustainable agriculture but also ensure that our clients benefit from more robust and productive macadamia harvests.

Ongoing Monitoring and Future Goals

The goal is to establish these trees as enduring resources for native pollinators, contributing to the overall health and resilience of the orchard ecosystem. By fostering a thriving, biodiverse environment, we not only support sustainable agriculture but also ensure that our clients benefit from more robust and productive macadamia harvests.
