Scott discusses the Reef Rescue Program, which focuses on improving practices in horticultural enterprises, specifically addressing issues related to nutrient, sediment, and chemical management. The program aims to enhance water quality leaving farms, consequently benefiting the overall water quality of the Great Barrier Reef. The initial phase provided financial support for businesses to acquire equipment for implementing best management practices. The current phase focuses on capacity building, offering technical training to farmers. Macadamia Farm Management, a beneficiary, highlights various projects funded by Reef Rescue, such as machinery to minimize runoff, including a sweeper broom that has significantly improved soil health by redistributing organic matter and promoting earthworm activity. Additionally, the Weed Seeker technology has reduced herbicide usage by about one-third, resulting in both environmental and financial benefits for the orchard management.
