Hort360: Environmental Impact Management

Apr 15, 2024 | New

MFM is proud to share our ongoing journey with Hort360, a leading best management practice framework for the horticulture industry, developed by Growcom. Our commitment to Hort360 underscores our dedication to sustainable farming practices and highlights our efforts to continuously improve and adapt in an ever-evolving industry.

Embracing Comprehensive Environmental Stewardship

Hort360 provides a comprehensive platform to evaluate and enhance our environmental and sustainable practices across our operations. From water management and soil health to biodiversity and energy use, Hort360’s holistic approach has enabled us to identify areas for improvement and implement actionable strategies that benefit both our crops and the environment.

Advancing Through Best Management Practices

Through the Hort360 framework, MFM has systematically assessed and improved its practices, ensuring that we not only meet but exceed industry standards for sustainability. Our involvement with Hort360 has led to significant advancements in:

  • Water Efficiency: Implementing state-of-the-art irrigation systems that minimize water use while maximising crop health and yield.
  • Soil Health: Adopting soil management practices that enhance fertility, reduce erosion, and increase carbon sequestration.
  • Pest and Disease Management: Utilising integrated pest management strategies to reduce reliance on chemical inputs.
  • Biodiversity: Promoting on-farm biodiversity by maintaining and establishing habitats that support beneficial insects and wildlife.

Recognition and Compliance

MFM’s adherence to Hort360’s guidelines has facilitated compliance with environmental regulations, ensuring our operations are both productive and environmentally responsible. This commitment has been recognised by industry peers.

Elevating Our Commitment with Reef Certification

Horticulture plays a pivotal role in reducing the impact of farming management practices on water quality in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Our initiative to become Reef Certified through Hort360 is crucial for:

  • Reducing pollutants such as fine sediment, pesticides, and nutrients from leaving the farm and entering waterways.
  • Demonstrating strong industry stewardship towards Reef water quality.

The Importance of This Initiative

Improving the quality of water flowing to the GBR is critical to enhancing its resilience. Our efforts in maintaining ground cover, adopting precision technology, and proactive monitoring contribute significantly to this goal.

The Macadamia Industry’s Leadership

The macadamia industry, with MFM playing a significant role, represents an exceptional area of Reef Certified production, showcasing our commitment to best management practices and stewardship.

What’s Next?

We encourage the macadamia industry to maintain this fantastic demonstration of leadership through continued involvement in the program. The benefits of becoming Reef Certified include evaluation of practices, recognition of commitment to environmental stewardship, and the opportunity to leverage a higher price for produce.

Hort360: Our Path Forward

Participation in Hort360 and Reef Certification is a testament to our commitment to sustainable agriculture and the health of the GBR. It’s a clear demonstration of our collective responsibility to future generations.
